NY launches new school district incentive program

ALBANY — New York school districts that take strong steps to operate more efficiently and save money are now eligible for funding from a $75 million pool of grants that will be distributed over the next three years.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday the "School District Management Efficiency Awards" will be given to districts on a competitive basis that rewards innovation and comprehensive plans that improve education while reducing costs and increasing productivity.

The program is separate from the regular system of distributing school aid to districts based on standard formulas.

Applications to the state education department are due by June 6 and contenders will be given bonus points if they have new teacher evaluation systems in place by Sept. 1.

When J.J. Abrams took over the "Star Trek" franchise in 2009, he boldly went where the series hadn't gone before — romantically — pairing Uhura with Spock. Many fans disliked the change. Some loved it. Others didn't care, because they just wanted to see Kirk and Spock make out.
