Saranac Lake overpass damaged

SARANAC LAKE — The Route 3 overpass used by Saranac Lake Central School students is coming down after being damaged in an accident Thursday.

A truck carrying a backhoe struck the pedestrian passover bridge about 3 p.m.

The highway was closed by the State Department of Transportation, which called in an engineer to determine how much damage was done and whether it was safe to use the overpass. Traffic was being detoured around Saranac Lake.

It is located next to the Middle School and is used by students crossing over Route 3.

By Friday morning, a decision had been made to remove the structure. DOT crews were joined by workers from National Grid and the Village of Saranac Lake to remove the concrete structure, which has been in place for 50 years.

Quinton Haynes, 17, of Saranac Lake was an eyewitness when a truck hit the overpass Thursday, and he stayed on to provide information. He said he heard a “tremendous noise” and squealing brakes and saw the backhoe on the truck strike the overpass.

No one was injured, and police are investigating.
